The Bangkok Post reports that security has been tightened on the Thai side of the border after a car bomb exploded in Myawaddy on Saturday night, at the top of Friendship Bridge No. 1 across the Thai-Burmese border.

The blast on Saturday night was clearly heard even in Mae Sot on the other side of Myawaddy. The Bangkok Post reports that a car bomb may have been planted by a car parked in front of the Myawaddy checkpoint at the top of the Friendship Bridge.

After the blast, there was a power outage around the area and about 30 gunshots were heard. The blast damaged several buildings and several cars in the area, but no fatalities have been reported so far.

After the blast, the Burmese Army and BGF Border Guard arrived and searched the area. Firefighters put out the blaze with a burning car.

The Naresuan Emergency Security Company and the Thai Border Guard are patrolling Mae Sot. Prior to the Myawaddy bridge explosion, 24 Burmese men and 25 women were arrested by Thai Border Patrols while they were waiting to find work in Bangkok and other cities.
